Whole Foods is known for having organic, fresh, and overall very good food. However, all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put humpty dumpty back together again. The lady behind the service counter went to the breakfast bar, gathered all the items (eggs, salsa, bacon, etc), came back to the counter, and rolled it into a tortilla. There was no mixing, melding, and or marrying of ingredients. Sports franchises often make the same mistake. Franchise owners can pay a ton of money for high profile free agents, but if they don’t gel together as a team, ultimately they are not going to win. This breakfast burrito contained all good stuff, but everything was clashing, instead of working together as a cohesive unit. The kicker was the lady rolled up the tortilla like a kid rolls up a clay snake, terrible! Or maybe the kicker was the $9 price tag. Yikes! I must note the Whole Foods breakfast burrito dining experience was graded a bit tough because it was my second breakfast burrito of the morning.

I had to work up in Canoga Park super early so I left the bike at home and drove on up to the Valley. The doughnut shop across the street didn’t serve breakfast burritos, so I thought I’d try this late night eateries hand at breakfast. Last time I had a Tommy’s Burger, most of the chili was around and not actually on the burger. I was worried my burrito was going to suffer the same fate. When opening the wrapping to reveal that all of the chili was contained within the parameters of the tortilla I cast a sigh of relief. The Chili filled burrito was holding strong, liked a capped oil well. You could actually see pockets of chili almost permeating the snuggly tucked burrito. The burrito was very good, a nice flour dusted tortilla, eggs, meat, hash browns, and chili that didn’t overpower or make a mess of the burrito, but rather complimented the other ingredients. The only knock was the sausage tasted of the cheap frozen food variety. The Tommy’s breakfast burrito is a great treat, but I don’t recommend starting every morning with chili in your burrito. Eat this breakfast in moderation. Great breakfast though. It exceeded all of my expectations for sure.

Egg lovers rejoice! A breakfast burrito for you has finally arrived. I cannot say that it was a bad breakfast burrito, but there was a noticeable imbalance of ingredients. Egg and more eggs is what I’m talking about. The cheese was delightfully greasy and the bacon was crisp but both were lacking. There were also no potatoes in the burrito. While some people shun starches like potatoes in their burritos, and think that they are merely filler, I believe if cooked right and distributed evenly that they are a vital part of a perfect breakfast burrito. Despite its egg heavy proportions the burrito was still okay, and the chips and salsa were good too. The same cannot be said about its appearance. It looked like someone shrunk wrapped my breakfast in a tortilla and served it up hot. The atmosphere was interesting. Nested under a billboard off Venice Blvd, which I am now convinced is the loudest street in the county, Phil’s is not a recommended place to take a first date. I actually stumbled across it on accident. I tried to get a good shot of the stand but an ambulance was obstructing my vantage. So I had to go with an alternate angle, which was pretty bad.
