Unlike most chili cheese dogs, Johnnie’s Pastrami serves up theirs open faced. It’s a fork and knife dog. You could try to eat this one with your hands but it wouldn’t be a pretty sight. I went the way of utensils and despite it being a hands on experience, it was still as good of a chili cheese dog that I have had to date. The dog was seriously charred. The third degree burns rendered new levels of texture and flavor. And a healthy smothering of cheese, onions, chili, and grease made this dog sing. While paying six bucks is a little steep for chili and cheese on a wiener, one must remember this dog was twice as big as the field. It was also from the trusted name of Vienna Beef. So ounce for ounce it was a great dog at a good price. Plus you get a complimentary bowl of pickles which are delicious. Johnnie’s is a super cool place with some fantastic food. The prices seem a little high, but a great atmosphere, retro servers, and quality food warrants it for sure.
